  • Powerful and honest information, Joel, that your readers would be wise to heed. And just as a quick aside, every person reading this post should also be commenting on your post – if only for the SEO benefits from commenting on a do-follow blog, and especially one like this with the CommentLuv plugin enabled!

  • So true. None of the things you need to do to rank high are rocket science but they do need to do the little things consistently.

Like Doug mentioned commenting here and other places is easy and done regualrly does a lot to get your posts ranked on page 1.

  • Yes, I agree Joel.

I too have had quite a bit of luck getting on the first page of Google for terms that are quite specific with just one blog post.

Just goes to show you the power of a properly optimized WordPress blog!

When you start trying to get there for broader terms is does take a little more effort but can still be done quite easily as long as you pay attention to your keywords.

Its not that much easy also to rank on first by just using your product name in Title of the blog, it will show good ranking for that particular keyword for some time but the ranking is not stable.

I realize you’re writing for online marketers who generally don’t have a bricks and mortar business, but this works even better for local businesses. If you run a mostly-local business, you don’t have to try to rank for the main keyword. Start by ranking for the LOCAL version. So for example, trying to rank for “pianos” could be tough, but “vancouver pianos” could be very quick and effective.
